About Alex

Alex Ballinger was elected as the Member of Parliament for Halesowen in 2024. A lifelong public servant, Alex’s career has been defined by dedication – to his country, his community, and those most in need.

After graduating with a degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Manchester, Alex joined the Royal Marines in 2005. He served twice in Afghanistan, in 2006 and 2009, leading teams in some of the most challenging environments imaginable.

Following his military service, Alex continued his commitment to public duty by joining the Department for International Development, where he led humanitarian and refugee operations during the Syrian civil war.

His work later took him to Pakistan with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, where he oversaw governance programmes in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and went on to head the UK’s mission in Lahore. During the Afghanistan evacuation in 2021, Alex led a team that helped hundreds of people escape Taliban rule across the border to safety in Pakistan.

Before entering Parliament, Alex served as the Chief Executive of a mental health charity supporting communities across Birmingham and the Black Country, helping people rebuild their lives with compassion and practical support.

In Westminster, Alex is a champion for Halesowen and the wider Black Country, campaigning for greater investment in manufacturing, town centre regeneration, and improved road safety. He has also been a leading voice calling to reform gambling laws to protect vulnerable people from gambling harm.

Alex continues to maintain strong links with the Armed Forces as Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Armed Forces and brings his international experience to the Foreign Affairs Select Committee.
